Class Levels

This is meant to be a general guideline to assist parents in scheduling their child(ren) into the  appropriate class. Star Swimmers by Sandy has a comprehensive level system which captures successful milestones in your child’s learn to swim journey. Each of the levels listed below have multiple ribbons associated to your child’s progress. See Star Swimmers Performance Chart for more detailed information.

Waterbabies:

These lessons are designated for infants between the ages of 4 months (full term pregnancies) and 24 months old.  A parent is required to be in the pool with the infant, preferably the same parent each class to ensure consistency.  Infants are gradually introduced to water safety skills. Each lessons builds on the skill set introduced the previous lesson working towards self-survival swimming skills.   The instructor initiates each new skill with the infant and then teaches the parent how to perform each skill once the infant has mastered it. Waterbabies can be booked into a tot class; simply put the initials ‘WB’ after your child’s name when booking them into a class.

Tots :

These lessons are designated for children 2 years of age to 5 years old who can sit or stand at the shallow end steps. Classes may contain new beginners as well as children swimming a width of the pool. Because each child learns differently and at a different pace there will be a variety of swim abilities within the group. Each child is taught to their individual needs building on the skills learned from the previous class. The focus of these classes is teaching the child self-survival swimming skills and instilling confidence in the water.

Juniors :

These classes are meant for swimmers 4 to 7 years of age that can comfortably swim the width of the pool unassisted. These swimmers will be focusing on gaining the confidence and strength to swim the length of the pool on their front and on their back without assistance. Emphasis will be placed on rhythmic breathing and the introduction to proper swimming techniques – including body position, and leg and arm movements.

Intermediates :

Children will be swimming 2 to 6 lengths of the pool in each of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Emphasis will be placed on perfecting the timing of rhythmic side breathing in front crawl and becoming proficient in backstroke and elementary backstroke. Diving will be introduced in pools that are safe to do so.

Advanced/Seniors:

These children will be swimming a minimum of 6 lengths of the pool proficiently in the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Breaststroke will be introduced, followed by sidestroke and butterfly once students have adequately progressed with the previous strokes. Emphasis is placed on stroke correction and endurance with the aim towards perfecting the stroke. Depending on the make up of class competitive swimming skills may be introduced. These children have the option of taking four (4) one hour classes rather than the six (6) forty minute classes. Such arrangements can be made with Sandy.

Adult swimming classes:

Please contact Sandy if you are interested in adult lessons. Private and semi private lessons are available upon request.  Group lessons of 4 or more can be arranged if there is a demand.
